TOBO GEAR / MACHINING CAPABILITIES
CNC Machining for Gears, Shafts & Custom Parts
A gear only fits as well as the surfaces around its teeth. From gear blanks and shaft features to bores, shoulders and mounting details, CNC machining forms an important part of a controlled manufacturing route.
Tobo Gear reviews your part drawing, material, quantity and inspection needs before discussing the machining steps suited to your project.
with a purpose.
THE MACHINING CONNECTION
Good gear manufacturing starts before tooth cutting.
Turning establishes the reference
Outside diameters, bores, faces and shaft features set the geometry used by later operations.
01
Milling shapes the functional details
Flats, slots, pockets and selected mounting features are machined to the approved drawing.
02
Gear cutting follows the right route
Tooth generation and any required finishing are planned separately from general CNC turning or milling.
03
01 / MACHINING METHODS
Two processes. Different jobs.
One drawing to work from.
Turning and milling are complementary operations. The part geometry determines where each is useful.

PROCESS 01 CNC TURNING
Turning for gear blanks and shafts
CNC turning is suited to rotational features such as outside diameters, bores, faces, steps and bearing seats. For a gear blank, these surfaces can also establish the datums used for later tooth cutting and inspection.
PROCESS 02 CNC MILLING
Milling for features that make parts fit
CNC milling can produce flats, slots, pockets, bolt features and other non-rotational details. Tool access, setup, material and tolerance requirements determine the practical route for each part.
02 / PART FEATURES
Small features.
Important fit.
The drawing, rather than the process name, tells us which features and reference surfaces matter most.
01
Gear blanks and hubs
Blank diameters, face widths, bores and hub surfaces before or alongside tooth manufacturing.
02
Gear shafts
Journals, steps, shoulders and other drawing-defined shaft features.
03
Mounting interfaces
Bolt holes, flats, slots and selected mating features where the geometry permits.

03 / PROJECT WORKFLOW
From drawing to measured part.
Every operation should be tied to a requirement that can be checked. The route below is a practical starting point, not a fixed process for every component.

04 / APPLICATION FOCUS
Machined parts for real assemblies.
Tobo Gear’s CNC machining content is focused on precision gear and mechanical component projects, not a claim that every type of CNC job fits the same process.
For medical-device applications, please identify the intended use and any required supplier qualifications, documentation or controls during the project review.
05 / MATERIALS & RFQ
A useful quote begins with the part, not a price list.
Material selection and machining cost depend on geometry, stock condition, production quantity, inspection needs and any secondary operations.
Materials such as carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, aluminum alloys or other specified grades may require different machining plans. Availability and suitability must be confirmed for each drawing.
06 / QUALITY CONTROL
Inspect what affects fit and function.
Machined dimensions should be checked against the approved drawing and the agreed inspection plan. For gear-related components, those checks may include bores, journals, shoulders, runout and datum relationships.

07 / FREQUENT QUESTIONS
CNC machining FAQs
Useful answers before requesting a quotation for gears, shafts or other custom-machined components.
What is the difference between CNC machining and gear cutting?
CNC machining commonly refers to operations such as turning and milling that form dimensions and features. Gear cutting specifically creates the tooth geometry through a suitable process such as hobbing, shaping or another method. A gear project may need both.
Can a gear blank be CNC machined before tooth cutting?
Yes. Rotational blank features such as bores, faces, hubs and diameters are often turned before gear teeth are produced. The machining route depends on datum choices, part design, heat treatment and the required final accuracy.
What drawing information is needed for a CNC machining quote?
Provide the latest drawing or model, material, quantity, tolerances, surface finish and heat-treatment condition, plus any critical fits or inspection requirements. Include complete gear data if tooth cutting is part of the project.
Can you quote tight tolerances or special materials?
Send the specific drawing requirements. Feasibility must be reviewed by feature, material, process, measurement method and quantity. No universal tolerance or material availability is assumed for every job.
Can CNC machining be combined with gear manufacturing?
It can. Turning or milling may prepare blanks and functional features, while tooth cutting, heat treatment and finishing are selected separately according to the part. Tobo Gear can review the requested combination based on your technical information.
