Quality Control for Precision Gears
Quality requirements should be clear before production begins. Tobo Gear reviews drawing requirements, critical dimensions, material and heat-treatment needs, and inspection expectations to help define a suitable quality-control plan for each project.
From initial technical review to final inspection, the control points should match the gear design, application and agreed acceptance criteria—not a generic checklist.
01 / QUALITY BY DESIGN
Quality Starts With Clear Requirements
A reliable inspection plan starts with the latest drawing and an agreed understanding of what matters to the application.
Gear type, dimensions, tooth geometry, material, heat treatment, fit and operating conditions can all influence which checks are appropriate. Tobo Gear can review the information supplied for your project and clarify the inspection scope before production requirements are finalized.
02 / PROCESS CONTROL
Quality Checks Across the Manufacturing Process
The checkpoints below are a practical framework. The actual sequence and inspection scope depend on the gear design, manufacturing route and customer requirements.
01
Requirement Review
Review drawings, gear data, tolerances, quantity, application and required quality documents before confirming the project scope.
02
Material Verification
Confirm material identification and any required certificates or material checks against the agreed specification.
03
In-Process Checks
Monitor selected dimensions and process characteristics at the stages defined in the project control plan.
04
Heat-Treatment Review
Where heat treatment is specified, confirm the agreed requirements and related verification records.
05
Final Inspection
Check agreed dimensions and gear characteristics against the approved drawing and acceptance criteria.
06
Records & Release
Prepare the agreed inspection evidence and clarify any open issues before shipment release.
03 / INSPECTION SCOPE
What Can Be Checked on a Gear?
The inspection scope should be selected according to the component and drawing. Not every gear requires every test, and any special measurement or report should be agreed before production.
- Dimensional featuresBores, diameters, widths, lengths, shoulders and drawing-defined dimensions.
- Tooth geometryProfile, lead or helix, pitch, tooth thickness and runout where applicable.
- Material and hardnessMaterial verification, hardness checks or metallographic evaluation when specified.
- Fit and contactBacklash, fit or tooth-contact checks when the design and mating components require them.
04 / MEASUREMENT & VERIFICATION
Inspection Methods Matched to the Project
Use the image cards below to show Tobo Gear’s actual equipment and inspection activities. Replace each temporary image with a photo from your own workshop or quality lab before publishing.

METHOD 01
Dimensional Inspection
Verify selected dimensions and geometric relationships against the approved drawing using an appropriate measurement method.
METHOD 02
Gear Geometry Checks
Where required, evaluate tooth profile, lead or helix, pitch, tooth thickness and runout based on the agreed inspection plan.
METHOD 03
Material & Hardness
When specified, verify material documentation, hardness or metallographic requirements relevant to the gear’s intended service.
05 / DOCUMENTATION
Agree on Quality Records Before Production
Inspection reports are most useful when the required checks and acceptance criteria are agreed in advance. Tell us what your engineering, quality or supplier-approval team needs to review.
01
Dimensional inspection resultsFor the dimensions and tolerances identified in the inspection scope.
02
Material or heat-treatment recordsWhen required by the drawing, purchase order or project specification.
03
First-article or project-specific documentsFAI, PPAP or other customer formats can be discussed and confirmed for the project.
FOR YOUR RFQ
Help Us Define the Right Inspection Scope
Share the latest drawing and note any critical characteristics, material requirements, heat treatment, quantity and report format.
Inspection methods and deliverables are confirmed during technical review. Do not assume every test or report is included unless it is agreed for your project.
06 / COMMON QUESTIONS
Quality Control FAQs
A few details can help align the inspection plan before a custom gear project enters production.
What information should I provide to define quality requirements?
Start with the latest drawing or 3D model, gear data, material and heat-treatment requirements, quantity, application and any critical dimensions or inspection documents required by your team.
Can you inspect gear tooth geometry as well as general dimensions?
Gear-tooth inspection may include profile, lead or helix, pitch, tooth thickness and runout where applicable. The available method and report scope should be confirmed against your part and project requirements.
Does every gear require the same inspection plan?
No. Inspection depends on gear type, geometry, tolerances, material, heat treatment, mating relationship, application risk and order requirements. The plan should be specific to the component.
Can you provide material, hardness or heat-treatment records?
These records can be discussed when they are required by the drawing, purchase order or agreed quality plan. Please identify the exact documents and acceptance criteria in your RFQ.
Can FAI or PPAP documentation be discussed for a new project?
Yes. Share the customer-specific requirements and required format so TOBO GEAR can review feasibility, scope and timing before the project is confirmed.
