Reverse Engineering for Precision Gears

When an original drawing is missing or a replacement gear is difficult to source, the existing component can provide a useful starting point. Tobo Gear can review your sample, available technical data and application requirements to discuss a practical route toward a replacement gear.

The goal is not simply to copy visible wear. It is to understand the gear geometry, interfaces and service requirements before confirming the manufacturing and inspection scope.

01 / WHEN REVERSE ENGINEERING HELPS

Have a Gear That Is Difficult to Replace?

Reverse engineering may be worth evaluating when drawings, original supply or reliable part information are no longer available.

Missing drawing icon

No Original Drawing

The original print or CAD file is missing. An available sample, mating component and application details may help recover the information needed for a replacement.

Worn gear icon

Worn or Damaged Gear

Wear and damage can obscure the original tooth form. The sample should be assessed carefully, and a mating gear or additional operating information can be valuable.

Obsolete replacement part icon

Obsolete Replacement Part

When a legacy part is difficult to source, reverse engineering can help assess whether a replacement can be manufactured to agreed technical requirements.

02 / OUR APPROACH

From Physical Sample to Replacement Gear

Each project is reviewed individually. The actual sequence depends on sample condition, gear type, available information and agreed requirements.

01

Sample evaluation icon

Evaluate the Part

Review the sample, any existing drawing, mating parts, equipment details and operating conditions. Identify missing information before defining the next step.

02

Measurement icon

Measure Key Features

Capture relevant dimensions and gear features using suitable methods. If the part is worn, distinguish measurable evidence from geometry that must be inferred.

03

CAD reconstruction icon

Reconstruct the Geometry

Develop or review the gear model and manufacturing drawing as agreed. Confirm interfaces, tooth data, fits and assumptions with the customer.

04

Manufacturing review icon

Review Manufacturing Needs

Evaluate suitable material, heat treatment, machining and finishing requirements against the intended duty and available information.

05

Inspection and verification icon

Inspect and Verify

Check agreed dimensions and gear characteristics. Fit, backlash or contact pattern can be considered when relevant to the design and mating components.

06

Documentation icon

Confirm Records and Next Steps

Agree the drawing revision, inspection evidence, quantity and repeat-order reference needed for the project.

03 / WHAT TO SEND

What Information Helps Us Review Your Gear?

Start with what you have. A physical sample is often more useful than photos alone, but available information can be reviewed first to determine the best next step.

  • Physical gear or assemblyInclude a mating gear if available, especially when the original part is worn or damaged.
  • Photos and reference dimensionsPhotograph all sides, tooth faces, bores, keyways, splines and visible damage. Add a ruler or known dimension for scale.
  • Application informationMachine model, function, speed, load, operating conditions and failure history can help clarify requirements.
  • Available documentsOld drawings, part numbers, material details, heat-treatment records or previous inspection reports.
  • Quantity and timingState prototype or production quantity, target timing and repeat-supply expectations.

Industrial component inspection and measurement

BETTER INPUTS, CLEARER REVIEWSamples, dimensions and application context all matter.

05 / TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Reconstructing a Gear Is More Than Copying Its Dimensions

Wear, deformation or broken teeth can hide the original geometry. A reliable review considers the condition of the sample and, where available, the mating component and application data.

Depending on gear type, the review may consider module or diametral pitch, tooth count, pressure angle, helix angle and hand, pitch and profile information, tooth thickness, bore and mounting interfaces, material, heat treatment and required accuracy.

These parameters should not be guessed from appearance alone. Where information is incomplete, assumptions and customer confirmation should be documented before the replacement specification is approved.

REVIEW CHECKLISTKey questions before production
01

What does the gear mate with?Provide the mating gear or assembly details when possible.

02

Is the sample worn or broken?Damage may make original geometry harder to recover confidently.

03

What are the operating conditions?Load, speed, duty cycle and failure history can affect material and design decisions.

04

What needs to be verified?Agree critical dimensions, inspection methods and required records.

06 / COMMON QUESTIONS

Reverse Engineering FAQs

Have an old gear, a damaged sample or incomplete documentation? These answers can help you prepare an initial enquiry.

Can TOBO GEAR review a gear when the original drawing is missing?

Yes, you can send details of the physical sample and application for an initial review. Feasibility depends on sample condition, gear complexity, available mating parts and the information needed to define the replacement.

Can a gear be recreated from a worn or broken sample?

It may be possible, but wear and fracture can obscure the original geometry. A mating gear, assembly information, older records or additional dimensions may be needed to reduce uncertainty.

Are photos enough to start a reverse-engineering enquiry?

Clear photos and reference dimensions can support an initial discussion. They are not always sufficient to define a manufacturing-ready gear, so a physical sample, drawing or additional technical information may be required.

Can you help identify material and heat-treatment requirements?

Available material records, sample condition and service requirements can be reviewed. The original specification should not be assumed from appearance alone; any proposed material or heat-treatment route must be confirmed for the project.

What should I include in my RFQ?

Include photos or a sample description, available drawings, mating-part information, application, quantity, target timing and any critical dimensions or quality documents. Tell us what is known and what still needs to be determined.
